Support for Swami Sanand’s fast from various people- II

22 August, 2018

Dear Prof. G. D. Agrawal,

We know that you have now  a new identity: you are now known as Swami Gyan Swarup Sanand. However, to us you remain our dear teacher Prof. G. D. Agrawal, and to some of us, our first warden at IIT, Kanpur. So you are like a father to many of us.

Your present indefinite fast is in the great tradition of Mahatma Gandhi. You believe that moral force can correct the path of a society that has lost its way in the quagmire imposed upon it of a vulgar consumerist way of life which is harmful and in any case is impossible for all to have, so more than three-quarters of the population only gets what is it’s destructive side: pollution in water, in the air, in the food-chain, of which Ganga’s pollution is emblematic of a death spiral of a civilization that depended on it for thousands of years. India cannot follow the path of a US or even a China to solve its problems of feeding, clothing, educating and providing shelter to all and taking care of the already a very fragile ecology. India has to leave that path. But for now, that is the path until it becomes impossible for the vast majority to live in it. That unfortunately is where it is headed under the current social-political order, seems to us. By your indefinite fast at age 86 you are warning us all of the looming catastrophe.

However, we fear that unlike the time, when there were tens of millions who had become convinced the British must leave India, today there is no such consensus on the alternate to the developmental model that has resulted in the malaise of consumerist life and ecological decay we face, of which Ganga’s pollution is emblematic. In fact our present ruling Party and its opposition also wants to continue on the same path. So, we do not think your fast will change the minds of the ruling classes.

But we have heard you and are willing to commit ourselves to this cause, and find ways to bring to wider society’s consciousness what you are trying to do by your indefinite fast. As our teacher, you gave us knowledge and taught how to keep learning, and have by your example inspired many others to work for the wider society, not just for his or her family. You have made others aware of the perils of the current path of Indian society. The rest is for others to do. We the undersigned pledge to carry your work forward. In return we ask you to please break your fast and save your health. We will be better guided with you in good health in this work.

As a symbolic gesture, we all will observe fast on August 21st, 2018, and we urge you to break this fast now or latest by August 21st.
